Why We Built This

PawYears started with a pretty ordinary question: how old is my dog, really? A friend's Labrador had just turned seven, and everyone kept saying "that's basically 49 in human years" like it was gospel. It didn't sit right. A quick search turned up the same tired seven-year rule on site after site, none of it accounting for breed, size, or the fact that dogs age in fits and starts rather than at some steady, predictable pace.

That gap is where this website began. We wanted a place where dog owners could get real answers not a recycled myth dressed up as fact, but numbers grounded in how veterinarians actually think about canine aging.

What We're About

We're not a veterinary clinic, and we don't pretend to be one. What we are is a small team that cares about doing the boring-but-important research so you don't have to. Every calculator on this site age, weight, calories, care  is built from published breed data, standard veterinary formulas, and a fair amount of double checking against sources that know what they're talking about.

We also happen to like dogs, obviously. Between us we've had Labradors, a stubborn Beagle, two rescue mutts of indeterminate origin, and one Chihuahua who acted like she owned the place. That mix of experience shapes a lot of what ends up on this site  we know what it's like to Google something at eleven at night because your dog is acting a little off, and we try to build tools that would actually help in that moment.

How We Approach the Tools

Our goal with every calculator is simple: take something that used to require guesswork or a spreadsheet and make it instant, clear, and honest about its limits. We're upfront when a number is an estimate rather than a diagnosis, because we'd rather you trust what we publish than be impressed by it for five minutes and then find out it was wrong.

We also try to keep things breed-aware wherever it matters. A Great Dane and a Chihuahua don't age the same way, don't eat the same way, and definitely don't have the same idea of a good walk — and a calculator that treats them identically isn't doing anyone any favors.

A Quick, Honest Note

Nothing here replaces your veterinarian. We build tools to help you ask better questions and notice things earlier, not to hand out medical advice. If something about your dog seems off, please talk to a vet  that's always the right call, calculator or not.
